At Prost! I had the Zwickel Bier, a Kellerbier which is an old German style lager that is unfiltered and unpasteurized that dates back to the Middle Ages.

Strange Brew Festival, Port Townsend

It was nice to see some of the larger brewers intermingled with the smaller brewers here in small town Western Wa. and trying to put out something a little off centered. Ninkasi was there with their Unconventionale. This was a nice heavy stout, you could taste the lavender and chamomile with a decent hop characteristic. Big Al's brought their Nut Warmer. This is from what I heard the second year in a row that they have brought this beer. They also brought this beer to the Winter Beer Festival at the Hale's Palladium. The beer both last year at the the Strange Brew and Winter Beer Fest was out in a rather quick fashion. Last year at the Strang Brew, I was told that this beer ran out on the first day. And at the Winter Beer Fest it was out before we made our way to the Big Al booth in the back on the first day. All in all, this beer is in high demand where ever it can be found, and for good reason. It was well balanced it was really like a peanut butter stout which I thought was really good. Lauren tried sceptically and enjoyed it as well, it was one of the stand outs of the festival.
Naked City promised earlier in the month at their brewer's night at the Latrona Pub, that they were going to really go out on a limb at this year's Strange Brew. Well they came through with multiple candy beers. First was their Sour Patch Kids IPA. This was a really good beer. They really used the hops for a citrus sweetness and a nice compromising sour flavor well. I enjoyed this beer I would say this was my 4th favorite beer that I tried, though its hard to rate beers when you are drunk and dont remember them all. All in all a really good beer.                                                                                                                                                                      When we made a second lap around the room we saw that Naked City had a new beer. This time around it was a Hot Tomales Red. I dont like Hot Tomales the candy, though I do love beer so it was definitely worth a try. And after the first sip, Not Good. It was more cinnamon than beer so I was not a fan.                                                                                                                                                             A third beer that the rumor mill spit out that I did not see was a Junior Mint beer. I really would have loved to try this beer, well I would have had to have multiple samples because everyone knows you cant have just one Junior Mint.
Another larger brewery that made the trek to Wild West Washington was Redhook. They only brought one beer but it was a good one. It was a Shwartzbeir they name Ham on Rye. This was Rye brewed Smoke beer. No pigs were harmed while brewing this beer. But with the the smokiness that it offered up it was almost like their was a hammy flavor. MMMMM..... Ham Beer!
The Host did not bring the most, Port Townsend Brewing has many great brews to offer, however I thought this strange brew was too much of a reach. An Orange Chocolate Stout sounds good in concept but in order to be a good beer the execution I would think would have to be flawless. This beer in particular didnt reach where it could have been. However, it wasnt the near the worst beer I tasted here.Pike also decided to make the 2 hour drive with their Salt & Pepper Weisse Beer. This was a BAD beer. Though at the strange brew festival they came up with a beer that tasted as advertised, it was not good. The best way that I could describe it is that it was a Miller Lite with a cup of salt and a cup of pepper added. This wins for beer that taste the most as described, but not in a good way.   Seven Seas Brewery Showed up with 2 great Strange brews. First was their Single Hopped Winter beer Ballz Deep integrated with Blueberry Puree. This was a really great beer. Using the Citra Hops to make a nice citrus flavored IPA without any Blueberry added. I know what your thinking, woohoo another Blueberry beer. But this isnt Budweiser's Wild Blue. It was a great brew. The tartness of the hops and the sweetness of the Blueberries really worked off one another.                                                                                                Seven Seas second offering was a spicy Bloody Mary Beer, 7 Bloody Seas. Now Ive heard of bloody marys made with a light beer. But this beer had no vodka. It was very spicy, with horse radish and syracha I needed 2 or 3 beers just to cool my mouth down from this beer. 7 Bloody Seas was a kick in the mouth in the good way, I kinda want a spicy beer now.

The best beer that I tried at the Strange Brew Fest was by far and away Flyers Brewery Almond Roca Brown ale. It was more of a dessert beer but I went back for seconds and thirds. This will be a beer that I will look into getting if they ever produce it on a mass quantity or at the brewery.

In the end the small town of Port Townsend really packed a punch for its 7th annual Strange Brew Fest. This was obvious considering their were no hotel rooms in the city for the weekend. Their were some winners and some losers but it was well worth the 2 hour drive to the western peninsula.

Single Wide IPA

A good IPA; Citrus and Floral Hop characteristics. Out of KC, this beer is was also dry hopped. Very good product put out by Boulevard Brewing.
Fire Station 5 Brewing: Steam Pumper IPA. Brewed by Portland Brewing Company it has Light Hop flavor, and amber in color.

Naked City Brewers Night at Latona Pub

This was the the cask beer the Publicity Red, this was an amazing beer. It was a great red ale that was dry hopped in the cask which made so much better.
This is the Smoke Town Porter. This Porter is a Rauchbier or smoke beer. This was good, not overly smokey but a good balance between the maltiness and smokey flavor. The nice part about Brewer's Nights is that the brewers are on premise to talk beer, explain their thoughts on their beers and answer beer questions.
I asked the brewer how the smoke flavor was added into this brew, knowing that traditional Rauchbeirs are traditionally smoked using Beechwood Logs. The Beechwood usually directly burned and smoke the malted barley. This beer was actually brewed with grains that came smoked using cherry wood, this gave it a really nice, not overly smokey taste.

Misc Beers...

At my favorite local watering hole The Hilltop Alehouse, they were serving Boundary Bay ESB on cask.

This was a special from Cascade Brewing, Glueh Kriek. Uber was only place that this sour could be found outside of the brewery. I cant describe how this beer was except, warm like cider, sour like cherries and then sweet like sugar. At Uber it was served with and orange and cloves giving it even more flavors than it has on its own. Here is the description given by the brewery's website.
This oak aged blend of Bing and Sour pie cherry sour red ales his been steeped on spices fresh from Grenada and wild flower honey, served with a slice of orange at 70 C deg. It's like Christmas in a glass before the credit card bill comes due!

This was brought to me to try by a friend, this is New Belgium's 2 Degrees Below Winter Seasonal. Here in the great NW you really need a great Winter Ale to stand out in the very plentiful Winter Seasonal market. This beer went in an opposite direction with a lighter malt and hop characteristic, when compared with numerous other NW Winter Ales, but is still a solid beer to have when the temperature drops.
This was also brought over for me to try, this is a English Style Brown Ale. When you think English Brown the biggest is Newcastle, however this is nothing like it. This is a darker, maltier and better English Brown. It has some flavors of coffee and chocolate. After doing just a bit of research Black Toad is out of Chicago, contract brewed by Goose Island Brewing.
The Bruery's Rugbrod, or "Rye Bread" in Danish. This is a specialty grain beer that is brewed in the same way that Belgium style Dark Strong Ale, which is a pretty much a Super Brown Ale. Yeah this beer is something special, The Bruery didn't brew this within a certain style so they pretty much just made a beer and called it what they wanted. It is brewed year round, but it is most definitely a winter beer. It is spicey and nutty and bready this is a must have when it the colder season.

Amnesia Brewing, Portland, Or.

A look into the brewing area at Amnesia Brewing, it was a small space but great beer came out of this little brewery.

While sitting outside on Amnesia's beautiful patio area where they were cooking dogs and sausages for the handful of people that were hanging out soaking up the sun, we enjoyed many different beers. Istarted off with their seasonal Oktoberfest while Lauren tried the Pale ale. Then from there we moved to IPAs.All in all, the Bratwurst was a great lunch and the beers were amazing. Also on the plus side, they are dog friendly all of this adds up to another visit to enjoy this gem.

After eating, drinking away an afternoon I felt that I need to take more pictures....

If my drunken memory serves me right, I believe they only had 3 fermenting tanks, also I love a sign that delivers good news.

A picture of the Lauter Tun.

As I was being told to hurry up because we were leaving I was able to snap off one more picture of their beautiful brew kettel, Amnesia makes me happy...

Beer Fest Day 2011

On January 29, there will be 2 highly anticipated beer festivals happening across the country from one another. Jupiter, Fl. is holding their 5th annual Jupiter Craft Beer Festival. After living and drinking in Florida, there is none better in the state. This festival is held at Roger Dean Stadium, the spring training home of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Florida Marlins. There will be over 50 breweries offering 150 brews, not to mention the "Best Dressed Monk Contest" this is surly not on to be missed if you live in FL. http://www.jupitercraftbrewersfestival.com/

On the other side of the country in Washington, Port Townsend is holding their 7th annual Strange Brew Fest. With over 30 Breweries and Cideries. Many local breweries brought some tasty stuff, whose recipes included such delights as cayenne, coconut, corriandor and cucumber. There are multiple categories in this festival that are organized by the letter and those are just some of the ingredients from catogory 'C'. Strange Brewfest 2011 is sure to be a sensory overload of deliciousness.
